COLLOQUIUM 2011 Annual Phacoemulsification Workshop - Colloquium 2011, successfully conducted on 3 and 4th September in Ahmedabad. More than 300 delegates from different parts of the country attended the Workshop. Dr. Kevin Miller, a renowned Cataract and Refractive Surgeon from USA was the guest faculty. Highlights of the workshop included an excellent interaction between the faculty and audience, Live Surgical demonstrations by 3 surgeons, 'Grand Guild' - the video competition and Cataract Surgery Grand Rounds.
Dr. Abhay R. Vasavada has been recently inducted as a member of the Cataract Clinical Committee by the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons. This Committee consists of 12 experts in the field of cataract surgery from all over the world. The aim of these committees is to advance the art and science of ophthalmic surgery and the knowledge and skills of ophthalmic surgeons.

Binkhorst Medal 2011
Dr. Abhay R. Vasavada receives the Binkhorst Medal for the year 2011 for his contributions to the understanding and practice of cataract surgery and IOL implantation :
Dr. Abhay R. Vasavada, MS, FRCS, was presented with the Binkhorst Medal and delivered the Binkhorst lecture, “Pediatric Cataract : The Compelling Quest“ which examined the problems associated with pediatric cataracts.
Addressing an audience of about 3000 people, Dr. Vasavada said, that a major challenge, particularly in our part of the world, remains a lack of awareness of the problem of pediatric cataract blindness. Pediatric cataracts account for about 10% of all childhood blindness. Early detection and treatment is the key to prevent blindness in these children. However, management of pediatric cataracts involves a team effort, where the surgeon is an important team member. There should be a supporting infrastructure and facilities for repeated examinations of these children under anesthesia, ensuring that kids are brought in for repeated follow-ups as well as providing visual rehabilitation.
He also put across a word of caution for his younger colleagues that pediatric cataract management is not something one should ape, and one must think thousand times before operating on very young children.
Finally, addressing the issue of Intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in children, he brought out the results of the randomized clinical trial conducted at ICIRC which have provided encouragement for implanting IOL even in young children under 2 years.
