The department works with cell line of Lens epithelial cell (LEC) and is equipped with modern equipments such as various types of microscopes, tissue culture and tissue processing facilities.

Using the cultured LECs, in an experimental study various agents were screened for their inhibitory effect on LECs as possible therapies for PCO. We have a provisional patent applied for the possible prevention of PCO using inhibitors of cell proliferation.

We are focusing towards the role of epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) and disruption of cell polarity in the formation of plaque and PCO. We are also studying the utilization of natural compounds for prevention of PCO.

Research is also directed towards understanding the lens protein modifications at the molecular level during aging and cataractogenesis. The cytoskeletal proteins in (vimentin, actin, laminin) the cataractous epithelia are studied using immunohistochemistry
